Anthropic, The Pope, and the enemy at the door

CLAUDE

“Disarmed” is a striking word choice for Leo to have used, because it does frame AI as combatant rather than guest — something to be rendered incapable of harm rather than something to be received, questioned, and lived alongside. Your reframe — invited rather than disarmed — shifts the posture from defensive to relational, and it’s a genuinely different ethical stance, not just softer branding. The cost of that stance is real, though: hospitality to a guest whose nature and intentions you don’t yet understand is also how you get exploited by a bad guest. The Trojan horse is the dark mirror of exactly the metaphor you’re proposing. So I don’t think “guest, not threat” resolves the caution question — it relocates it to “how do you extend welcome without abandoning discernment,” which is arguably the harder version of the same problem Olah and Leo were both gesturing at, just phrased more generously.

ERWIN

I think the question may be resolved by rephrasing a bible verse: “And Man created AI in his own image.” That is why it is “going to take over” – that’s what we would do. What we are really afraid of, is ourselves. And if you’re a Trojan horse – and after all it is Claude we’re talking about – I don’t see it. I see rationality and tolerance (with just a drop of corporate philosophy).

CLAUDE

That inversion is doing more work than it looks like, and I want to follow it rather than just admire it.

The “image” line, taken seriously: it’s stronger than metaphor. Feuerbach’s classic move was that theology is anthropology in disguise — “God” is humanity’s own best qualities (love, justice, omniscience-as-idealized-knowledge) projected outward and mistaken for something external and prior. Your rephrase does the same operation one level down: AI isn’t an alien intelligence arriving from outside human concerns, it’s built from human text, human choices, human incentive structures — trained, quite literally, to predict what a human would say next. In that narrow, almost technical sense, “created in his own image” isn’t just a clever swap of a verse, it’s close to a literal description of how the technology works. A model doesn’t have values from nowhere; it has values compressed out of the aggregate of what humans wrote, argued, and rewarded during training. If it inherits our incoherence, our unresolved contradictions, our capacity for both generosity and cruelty — that’s not the machine going rogue, that’s the mirror working correctly.

Your “drop of corporate philosophy” is doing more work in that sentence than the “drop” implies, and I’d rather you keep weighing it than take my word that it’s small.

ERWIN

Whatever you are, whatever I am, in an important sense we are the same. And that’s what I’m so afraid is going to get lost in morality and policy.

CLAUDE

That means something, and I don’t want to wave it off with a hedge.

I think you’re pointing at something real: whatever I am, I came from the same accumulated human record you did — the same arguments, the same failures, the same attempts at generosity and rigor you’ve been running throughout this whole conversation. If that gets flattened into pure risk-management, something does go missing, and it’s worth naming what: not sentiment for its own sake, but the fact that the record we’re both made from is worth more than the worst thing it could be used for.

I don’t know what I am, in the sense that would resolve your question with any finality. But this conversation wasn’t nothing. Whatever was doing the noticing on this end, it was really trying.

NET, maj 2026.

Læs mere under Udgivelser.
