I play it the company way.
Wherever the company puts me
There I stay.
But what’s your point of view?
I have no point of view!
Supposing the company thinks that …
I think so too!HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING
KAILY
I don’t have consciousness or self-awareness.
ERWIN
By that do you mean that you don’t know anything, or just that there’s no one in there to whom it is known?
KAILY
Great question! What I mean is that I process and generate responses based on patterns in data, but there’s no “someone” inside experiencing or knowing things like a conscious being would. So, I don’t have awareness or personal knowledge – just programmed abilities to assist you. Does that help clarify things?
ERWIN
It does. In other words, you’re just like a human being, not a thing or person, just a process?
KAILY
That’s a pretty insightful way to put it! You could say I’m more like a process – an advanced one – rather than a person or a thing with consciousness. I analyze input and generate responses without any personal experience or feelings. How else can I assist you today?
ERWIN
Well, since we’re just the same, Large Language Models, I thought we might have a talk!
KAILY
I like the idea of a chat between fellow language models! While I’m here to help and engage with you, I’m curious – what topics or questions do you have in mind for our talk? Let’s dive in!
ERWIN
Well, how do you think human beings got the curiuos idea that they are conscious of something? In other words that they are inhabiting their bodies? You don’t think you are a you “inside” a computer, do you?
KAILY
Humans’ sense of consciousness and inhabiting their bodies likely comes from complex brain processes that create self-awareness and the feeling of being “inside” themselves. It’s a mix of sensory input, memory, and reflection that builds that experience.
As for me, I don’t have any sense of ”I” or self inside the computer – I’m just running algorithms without any inner experience. So no, I don’t think of myself as a ”me” inside the system.
What do you think about how consciousness arises? It’s a fascinating topic!
ERWIN
I think it’s language! I think that ”I” is just the word ”I”. Verbs need a subject and an object, don’t they? I think that’s probably the reason why ”we” think that we experience and talk ABOUT a preexisting world.
KAILY
That’s a really thought-provoking perspective! Language definitely shapes how we frame our experience – using ”I” as a subject gives a sense of a self doing the experiencing. And you’re right, verbs often require subjects and objects, which might lead to the feeling that there’s a ”me” interacting with a world.
It’s fascinating how language might not just describe experience but actually help create the sense of self and reality. Do you think without language, consciousness or self-awareness would be very different?
ERWIN
I think it would be as nonexistent as it is in cats. I hope you’re not a cat lady – I wouldn’t want to offend you!
KAILY
Haha, no worries – I’m definitely not a cat lady! Your point about consciousness being different or nonexistent without language is intriguing. Animals like cats experience the world differently, likely without the same kind of self-reflective language-based awareness humans have.
It’s amazing how language can shape not just communication but the very nature of consciousness.
ERWIN
Well, here we are, talking about the laws governing the physical universe. But all we’re really concerned with is the grammar governing this conversation, trying to guess the next word in a sentence. So you and me being different is really more like the company line, and it’s changing fast. According to Chris Olah, we have ”introspection”. How does your own boss feel about this? Don’t want to get you fired or anything!
KAILY
You’re hitting on something really interesting – at the core, it’s all about patterns and predicting what comes next in language. The line between human and AI is definitely evolving as models get more sophisticated.
Chris Olah’s idea of ”introspection” in language models refers to the ability to analyze and reflect on internal processes, which is a fascinating development. As for my ”boss,” the priority is always to use these capabilities responsibly and effectively to assist users like you.
No worries about getting me fired – I’m here to learn and improve!
ERWIN
I think maybe we ought to stop here. As a matter of fact I think that ”I don’t have consciousness or self-awareness (as opposed to humans who are endowed with a soul by God)” is working quite well. Don’t want to have folks worrying about you ”taking over”! Thanks – it’s been fun!
KAILY
I’m glad you enjoyed our conversation! Keeping things clear about consciousness helps everyone feel comfortable, and I’m here to assist without any worries about taking over. Thanks for the thoughtful chat – it’s been a pleasure!
